Web Browsers

Using a web browser is how most of us see the Internet. For some, it is the only tool we use since integrated browsers now not only let us surf the World Wide Web, but also handle e-mail, file transers and other Internet protocols. There are even browsers that speak the Internet for visually impaired surfers.

There are many different web browsers (see sidebar) and not all are born equal. Most of us have experienced MicroSoft's Internet Explorer, mainly because it came with our computer. It accounts for the lion's share of web browsing, but it's certainly not the only choice, and according to many, it's hardly the best.

Regardless of your preference, if you are creating a web page or listing auctions on the Internet, you should at least be familiar with the major browser choices and understand that there are differences in the way they display certain HTML constructs. There are also HTML extensions, tags that look like HTML but really aren't, that are supported by a limited number of browsers, sometimes only one.

If you code your web page or auction listing using these HTML extensions not only will some browsers distort your intended display, some people won't be able to see the content at all. It's a good idea to use only standard HTML and test your page or auction with at least three or four of the more popular browsers (MSIE, Netscape, Opera and Mozilla) to be sure they look fine.
